Beyonce Mass A San Francisco-based episcopal church hosts Beyonce faithful to partake in an unfamiliar church mass that is centered on the worship of God through Beyonce’s greatest hits. It is a mass that has raised eyebrows as conservative Christians raised questions about conducting holy worship through the use of secular music. With hundreds in attendance, Grace Cathedral Church says the event is a chance for people to find God through secular music. Some observe termed the move “evil” saying they’re trying to substitute Jesus with Beyoncé.
When Did It All Start?
The Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, California was built in 1934 and all seemed to be business as usual until 2018 with the introduction of the Beyonce mass. Rev. Yolanda Norton (the mass organizer) claims to have been inspired by how she found Beyonce’s music to be inspirational and adored the fact that her songs raised questions on how African American women connect to their spirituality. The Beyonce mass was announced after Beyonce’s amazing performance in Coachella 2018.

Grace Cathedral attempts to bridge secularism and spirituality in order to make the church more appealing to the youth. This is as a response to the dwindling statistics that show mass attendance in North America to be at its lowest point.
Grace Cathedral is mostly attended by African American women as the messages seem to touch their lives the most as they find a greater connection with Beyonce considering that she is also an African American.
The church is progressive in nature and is a host to more progressive views and principles. As it hosts a congregation made up of mostly African Americans, people of the L.G.B.T community, and women.
The church was previously involved in another controversial method of conducting church services that involved a Jazz Service under Duke Ellington in the mid-1960s
The Beyonce mass is conducted by Rev. Yolanda Norton, professor of old testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary. She tries to raise awareness about the spiritual experience of African American women and the issues they face in society.

Norton is an Assistant Professor of Old Testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary who teaches a class she calls, “Beyoncé and the Hebrew Bible.” During the service, Norton said in a separate interview, they use lyric’s from Beyoncé’s songs as examples of what the crowd’s prayers to God could be. She said the service focuses on empowering women of color and other minority communities.
Countless professing Christians seem to have little or no shame about the compromises they will make with God’s word to attract a larger crowd. Substituting godly music, filled with words that glorify the Lord, for Beyoncé’s music, is just more evidence that we are in the apostasy that was prophesied by Jesus and the apostles (2 Tim. 4:2-4),” Joe Schimmel, pastor of Blessed Hope Chapel in Simi Valley, California and host of the documentary “They Sold Their Souls for Rock ‘N’ Roll,” told Christian News Network.
“Beyoncé is a horrifying role model for those who want to worship the living God, but sadly, she is a great role model for those who would rather worship Beyoncé, themselves, and dark occult powers,” Schimmel told Christian News Network.
Beyonce has yet to break her silence about the so-called “Beyonce Mass” that is being done in California. However, the “Single Ladies” singer seemed to have a different idea about going to church.
TMZ reported that the music icon just purchased a 7,500-square-foot stone church that was reportedly standing in New Orleans for 100 years.

The event is celebrated in modern times by Hindus and non-Hindus alike.
“Ah-oh-ah-oh-ah/Got me feeling drunk and high,” Beyoncé sings in the video, her hands covered with intricate henna designs customary to Hindu celebrations.

The church aims to raise awareness about institutional racism as it aims to teach people to be more tolerant in an attempt to lower racism in a country that has scars of racism from its dark past.
It teaches messages aimed at helping people attain mental freedom and boost self-confidence.
The church aims to open its doors to the L.G.B.T community since most conservative churches abandon them or do not offer a welcoming environment to the L.G.B.T community hence they find refuge within the Grace cathedral.
The church aims to be a pioneer of gender equality since it believes that the church as an institution has always been a male-dominated sector where men decide whether women are ordained or not yet people forget that God chose Mary, a woman.
Grace Church has a strong passion for black empowerment since it believes that empowering the black community is such a great issue due to instances of racism that blacks may face in society. Hence empowering the black community plays a major role hence the use of Beyonce as a symbol of worship and unity.
