Notably, Katz has been fortunate enough to serve the viewers in his home state for more than three decades on the air. He began his career when he interned during his senior year at LSU at WVLA-TV in Baton Rouge. While in school, he was hired to fill in for the 6 and 10 weathercasts at the age of 22 years. Following his graduation in 1988, he went to Lafayette as the weekend Meteorologist for KATC-TV. After one year, he was hired as the chief at KLAX-TV in Alexandria. During his tenure, Katz served as the chief for 18 months until WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge came calling.
In addition, Katz did the morning and noon weather from 1990 until 1996 at WBRZ. In 1996, he returned home to New Orleans where he spent the next 17 years as a Chief Meteorologist. Katz joined WVUE-TV in 2013 and hit the air on the 1st of January. In this capacity, he handled the 9 am, noon, and 4 pm weathercasts. Most importantly, he was promoted to chief meteorologist in November of 2022. Notably, in the history of FOX 8, there have only been 4 chiefs, and the longevity of the weather department averages 25+ years.
In Katz’s career in New Orleans, he has won 16 first-place awards from The Press Club Of New Orleans, and The Associated Press such as the Best Weathercast and Best Severe Weather Coverage. He is an LSU and Saints season ticket holder as well as an avid Pelicans fan. Katz enjoys working out, landscaping, bicycling, and just about anything outdoors during his spare time. WVUE-DT also known as channel 8 is a television station in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It is affiliated with the Fox network and owned by Gray Television. Channel 8 maintains primary studios on Norman C. Francis Parkway in the city’s Gert Town section, with a secondary studio within the Benson Tower in downtown New Orleans. Its transmitter is located on Magistrate Street in Chalmette, Louisiana.
Channel 8 currently carries most of the Fox network schedule, though it delays the network’s Saturday late-night hour by a half-hour due to a 10:00 p.m. newscast. Syndicated programs broadcast by the station as of September 2021 include Rachael Ray, Wheel of Fortune, Live with Kelly and Ryan, Right This Minute, 25 Words or Less, Judge Judy, Jeopardy, and Schitt’s Creek. Channel 8 is one of ten Fox affiliates to air both Jeopardy and Wheel; the others being WBFF in Baltimore; WSYT in Syracuse, New York; WXIX-TV in Cincinnati; WLUK-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin; KDVR in Denver; KVHP in Lake Charles, Louisiana; WALA-TV in Mobile, Alabama; WLUC-DT2 in Marquette, Michigan; and WDAF-TV in Kansas City.
WVUE consistently ranked at a distant third place in the ratings behind WWL-TV and WDSU-TV throughout the 1970s and 1980s. One of the primary reasons for its third-place position was the station’s heavy preemptions of network programs. The station also did not carry many of the network’s Saturday morning cartoons, and American Bandstand. It preempted ABC’s late-night programming, which before the 1979 debut of Nightline, consisted of movies and reruns of prime-time series. With ownership changes and programming modifications, WVUE was still unable to improve its standing in the ratings and essentially wouldn’t until it became a Fox affiliate.
