Colin Minehart Congress

Minehart, of Albert Lea, recently decided to drop his bid for Congress. He is instead running for the House District 27A seat, which includes Blooming Prairie and Hayfield. Minehart, a small business owner, said he believes he could do a better job helping people at the Minnesota Legislature.

“I knew that my legislative expertise and skills would just be better suited to St. Paul where I can actually help some people,” Minehart said.

He is vying for the chance to take on two-term Republican Rep. Peggy Bennett of Albert Lea. Minehart is one of two Democrats in the race. Thomas Martinez, a sanitation truck driver from Hayward, is also running for the seat. Minehart said he will abide by the party endorsement.

Minehart’s decision to drop out of the 1st Congressional District leaves four Democrats in the race. Candidates include Iraq War veteran Dan Feehan, former state Sen. Vicki Jensen, Mankato attorney Joe Sullivan and Rochester attorney Rich Wright. Two Republicans — Jim Hagedorn of Blue Earth and Sen. Carla Nelson of Rochester — are also running for the seat.
