Before relocating to Philadelphia, he worked for nearly four years at the NBC affiliate in Flint, Michigan. He was the market’s leading political reporter while also covering general assignment stories and serving as one of the station’s weather forecasters. additionally, he co-anchored weekend newscasts as well. In this capacity, he interviews then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Ford Motor Company President Alan Mulally, and even plays guitar with legendary rocker Ted Nugent.
In 2009, Kinchen left the newsroom to work for the citizens of Philadelphia in the executive branch of city government, as Communications Manager for the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, which included the Offices of Violence Prevention, Criminal Justice, and Department of Prisons. He served as a spokesman for Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and wrote speeches and statements for him and the administration. Dave also prepared city council testimony and policy documents for senior administration officials and assisted in the development of the Office of Policy and Strategic Initiatives for Criminal Justice and Public Safety.
