Harding is an award-winning local journalist who has worked with NewsCenter 5 for over 25 years. He has received numerous awards such as three Boston/New England Emmy awards for best Anchor-News and two first-place Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Sound Bites awards for On-Air Personality, among others. He came to Channel 5 in 1988 as a weekend sports anchor and reporter. Notably, he took over as co-anchor of the EyeOpener newscast in 2000 and added co-anchor of the 11 PM newscast in 2004. Harding was instrumental in the launch of WCVB’s NewsCenter 5 at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM in January 2016 when WCVB added those newscasts to its lineup.

Prior to WCVB, Harding served as sports director and principal sports anchor for WISH-TV, the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis. During his tenure, he anchored and produced the 6 PM and 11 PM sportscasts, co-produced and reported the station’s annual ‘Indy 500’ special, and was producer and host of The Colts Today, the NFL Indianapolis Colts coach’s show. He provided live reports and color commentary for Colts games on WIBC Radio for three years. During his time in the Midwest, he won two Indiana Associated Press awards and was named Best TV Sportscaster by Indianapolis Magazine.

Previously, Harding served as sports director and anchor for WDSU-TV in New Orleans from 1978 to 1981. He spends one year in Minneapolis as assistant sports director and weekend anchor for KMSP-TV. Between 1975 and 1977, he was sports director and anchor for WPTZ-TV in Plattsburgh, NY.

Its studios are located on TV Place in Needham, Massachusetts, and its transmitter is located on Cedar Street, as well as in Needham, on a tower that is shared with several other television and radio stations. The nearby Manchester, New Hampshire, is considered part of the Boston media market, making WCVB-TV part of a nominal duopoly with WMUR-TV or channel 9, that city’s ABC affiliate; however, the two stations maintain separate operations.

WCVB currently broadcasts 43 hours, and 55 minutes of locally produced newscasts each week; with 6 hours, and 35 minutes each weekday, five hours on Saturdays, and six hours on Sundays. It operates an Aérospatiale AS350B helicopter entitled “Sky 5” that is live broadcast capable. In addition, the station shares resources with the two other ABC affiliates in the state for statewide news coverage throughout Massachusetts: WLNE-TV in New Bedford and WGGB-TV in Springfield. Notably, WCAP in Lowell runs audio simulcasts of portions of WCVB’s morning and evening newscasts on weekdays.

Moreover, WCVB’s newscasts are titled NewsCenter 5, and the station’s sports segments are likewise branded as SportsCenter 5. The weather segments were similarly branded as WeatherCenter 5 before 2001. The station is believed to be the only local station permitted to use the SportsCenter name, owned by ESPN, for its sportscasts, owing to its ownership by Hearst and affiliation with ABC, along with its use predating ESPN’s 1979 existence.
