James Wieland Career
Wieland’s career has taken him on a unique journey from Florida’s sunny shores to the icy conditions of West Virginia, and then to the tumultuous thunderstorms of Georgia. While in Macon, Wieland’s professional journey culminated in being awarded the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval. He had to adjust to changing weather conditions and hone his meteorology skills along the way. After attending Florida State University, Wieland had to adjust to the icy weather conditions in Clarksburg, West Virginia, all the while learning how to dig out his car in the snow.
After relocating to the Carolinas, Wieland broadened his meteorological expertise by reporting on a number of storms over the course of his three-year tenure there. His work was recognized when he was voted the runner-up of the “Best of the Pee Dee” poll in the local newspaper, The Morning News.
When Wieland moved to Baltimore, he quickly learned how to accurately forecast for three different stations every night, tackling blizzards, twisters, and heat waves in one evening. Despite being a thousand miles away in his Baltimore studio, he was still able to provide a live coverage of Hurricanes Dennis and Charlie’s landfall on the Florida coastlines. Now, Wieland is thrilled to be back home in south Florida away from the cold and on the beach. His family lives in Palm Beach County and is even more thrilled to be able to watch his broadcasts live.
During his free time, Wieland loves hitting the beach for some surfing and he’s a proud member of the Surfrider Foundation. As a meteorologist, he started the area’s first surf blog to give insights on wave conditions at local beaches. He also enjoys playing golf without keeping score and going out on outdoor adventures, particularly water-based activities.
