Gardner attended and graduated from Columbia University in 1970 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. As a student, Gardner landed his first taste of broadcast journalism when he reported on the historic student riots at Columbia in 1968. Following his graduation in 1970, Gardner worked at the all-news WINS Radio in New York. Gardner joined WFAS Radio in White Plains, New York in 1972. He started his television broadcast career at WKBW-TV in Buffalo two years later. On June 1st, 1976, Gardner joined WPVI-TV in Philadelphia as a reporter and anchor of Action News at Noon. On May 11, 1977, he assumed the role of the anchor of Action News at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

More than 40 years later, on January 11, 2022, he anchored his last regularly scheduled 11 p.m. broadcast. You can still find him anchoring Action News at 6 p.m. until his retirement at the end of the year. Gardner has covered several national and international stories Gardner from the anchor desk, and in the field. While many of those stories do stand out, Gardner is most proud of his longevity and consistency, being there at 6 and 11 days in and day out for four decades.

He is very active in the community and has opportunities to give back to a variety of organizations. He is particularly proud of the fact that one broadcast journalism student at Temple University has been awarded the Gardner Scholarship to help pay for his or her education every year since 1987. Gardner has four children and lives with his wife Amy in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
