Joe Neguse Biography
Joe Neguse (born May 13, 1984) is an American politician who serves as an American politician. He has been a representative of the 2nd Congressional District of Colorado since 2019. A Democratic Party member, he was previously a Regent of the University of Colorado from 2008 to 2015. Neguse is the first Eritrean-American elected to the U.S. Congress and the first African-descendent congressman of Colorado.

The parents of Neguse immigrated from Eritrea to the United States. They met while living in Bakersfield, California, where Joe and his younger sister were born. The family moved to Colorado at the age of six.
They settled in Boulder after living in Aurora, Littleton, and Highlands Ranch. Neguse graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from ThunderRidge High School, the University of Colorado Boulder in 2005, and the University of Colorado Law School with a Juris Doctor in 2009.
Neguse, while a student, founded New Era Colorado, an organization to involve young people in politics. He worked as an assistant to Andrew Romanoff at the Colorado State Capitol. Additionally, he was elected to the Regents of the University of Colorado, representing Colorado’s 2nd congressional district in 2008, following his nomination by the Democratic Party.
In the 2014 elections, Neguse ran for Colorado State Secretary. He lost 47.5% to Wayne W. Williams, 44.9%. Governor John Hickenlooper appointed him Executive Director of the Regulatory Agencies Department of Colorado (DORA).In 2017, Neguse resigned from DORA to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District in the 2018 election, seeking to succeed Jared Polis, who successfully ran for Governor of Colorado. He also joined the administrative law firm, Snell & Wilmer.

Neguse announced on June 13, 2017, that after the incumbent U.S., He would run for the Democratic nomination. Representative Jared Polis announced that he would not run for re-election and would run for Colorado Governor On June 26, 2018. He faced former Boulder County Democratic Party chairman Mark Williams and businessman. In addition, he defeated Williams, receiving 65.7% of the votes and winning all 10 counties covering the district.
Neguse continued to face Peter Yu, a Republican businessman. Neguse defeated Yu on November 6, 2018, receiving 60.2 percent of the vote and winning the district’s all but 2 counties. Neguse was the first American – African to represent Colorado in the House of Representatives of the United States after the election.
