Akuwudike took on the role of Captain Watkin Tench in Our Country’s Good at the Royal Court Theatre. His initial film appearance occurred in the same year, portraying a priest in A World Apart. He secured a notable leading role in 1989 with the play The Fatherland by Murray Watts at the Bush Theatre at Riverside. On television, he made a significant impact as Sergeant Gummer in the drama serial Virtual Murder (1991). Primarily focusing on stage work, Akuwudike has contributed to various productions for institutions such as the National Theatre, featuring in plays like Not About Nightingales, Moon on a Rainbow Shawl, and Ion. He also performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and on Broadway. Akuwudike has an extensive film and television career, including voice acting.

In 1998, he originated the role of the Queen, a gay prisoner, in the first British production of Tennessee Williams’ Not About Nightingales, directed by Trevor Nunn at the National Theatre. In 2002, he portrayed the black pimp in a Royal National Theatre production of Edmond, with Kenneth Branagh in the title role. From February to May 2011, Akuwudike portrayed Abel Magwitch in an English Touring Theatre production of Great Expectations (adapted by Tanika Gupta), featuring Lynn Farleigh as Miss Havisham. In Cary Joji Fukunaga’s film Beasts of No Nation (2015), Akuwudike took on the role of Supreme Commander Dada Goodblood, leading an unnamed West African country torn by civil war. In September 2018, it was announced that Akuwudike had been cast, alongside Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu, in a new Cinemax television series titled Gangs of London, then in production.
