Barney became a member of the News4Jax team in February 2019. Having resided in Springfield since 1979, Barney has developed a strong passion for sports throughout his time there. He dedicated much of his early years to attempting various sports. Baseball proved elusive as he frequently faced strikeouts, and his parents, concerned about his safety, prevented him from pursuing tackle football. Looking back, it is likely they aimed to shield the family from enduring any lasting embarrassment.
After leaving his sporting days behind, Barney embarked on a new journey by becoming a sports writer for the Florida Times-Union in 1998. Some of his most memorable events over the years were his coverage of Tim Tebow’s outstanding performances at Nease from 2003-2005, being present during Derrick Henry’s extraordinary record-breaking season at Yulee in 2012, breaking the story on Ryan Freel’s diagnosis of CTE, a brain disease, in 2013, and reporting on academic challenges faced by athletes at Arlington Country Day in 2014. In addition to his responsibilities as a writer and editor, Barney also contributed his expertise as a seasonal radio and local sports television analyst for seven years in the local market.
