Hawthorne made her first on-screen appearance in an episode of the NBC drama series, I’ll Fly Away. She went on to appear in three episodes of In the Heat of the Night while living in Atlanta. In 1995, Hawthorne began playing Belinda Keefer in the ABC daytime soap opera, All My Children, until Amelia Marshall replaced her in the role in 1996. Hawthorne then replaced Michelle Hurd in the role of Dana Kramer on the NBC soap opera, Another World, from 1997 to 1998. During this time, she also starred in Cy Coleman’s Broadway musical The Life.

Later on, Hawthorne guest starred on a number of TV shows, such as Cosby, The Outer Limits, Stargate SG-1, The Twilight Zone, Andromeda, and The L Word. From 2000 to 2005, Hawthorne had a regular supporting role in the Canadian police drama series Da Vinci’s Inquest as Det. Rose Williams.
