She was born in Shiraz, Iran, her parents are James E. Bowman and Barbara T. Bowman during the Pahlavi dynasty. Her father, a pathologist, and geneticist ran a children’s hospital in Shiraz in 1956. One of her maternal grandparents was the first African-American architect at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jarrett’s mother was one of four child activists who founded the Erikson Institute in 1966. The institute was set up to offer collective information on child growth to teachers and other practitioners working with young children. Jarrett spoke Persian, French, and English as a child.

Jarrett joined the news team in 2016 straight from her law practice, she has covered many significant legal stories during the Trump administration, including migrant family separations at the southwest border, the travel ban, the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and high stakes battles between the Justice Department and Capitol Hill.
In May 2017, she lead the role of delivering the breaking news of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment to oversee the Russia investigation, as well as the conclusion of his work in March 2019. In addition, she also worked as the head reporter for CNN covering the Justice Department Inspector General’s report on the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information, and the corruption trial of Senator Bob Menendez.
Jarrett worked as an attorney in Chicago before joining CNN. She focused on defending companies and individuals in government investigations brought by the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as complex commercial litigation in private practice.
Most recently, she devoted significant time to pro bono cases, including the representation of a sex trafficking victim who successfully used a new Illinois law to expunge her past convictions. She worked as a law clerk for two federal judges, the Honorable Rebecca Pallmeyer in the Northern District of Illinois and later for the Honorable Ann C. Williams on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.
