Matt Chandler Career
Chandler got his first job as a janitor at Pine Drive Christian School in Dickinson, Texas. When he was 18, he was offered a job as a youth pastor at a small Baptist church. He then moved to Abilene. There, Chandler began leading Grace’s weekly Bible study at the Paramount Theater. Then he was employed by the Beltway Park Baptist Church under Pastor David McQueen. In 1999 he founded a non-profit organization called Waiting Room Ministries with his close friend Shane Barnard.
He also started seminary twice but dropped out both times because he felt he had mastered the tools he had learned in Bible School seminary. A woman on the board of her nonprofit organization asked Chandler to submit a resume to Highland Village First Baptist Church. Chandler says he didn’t expect to get the job due to conflicting beliefs. However, he accepted the job. The church had an attendance of 160 people at that time. Now known as The Village Church, it has since grown into a multi-site megachurch with over 14,000 visitors.
In March 2012 he was appointed President of the Acts 29 network, succeeding Mark Driscoll who had helped found the church planting network. He is also a senior pastor and senior teacher at Village Church, which is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and consists of a single campus called Flower Mound. The Church has an average annual growth rate of over a thousand people. He believes that the growth of the Church has brought many changes. He is also an author.

Handling of child molestation allegation
In June 2019, The New York Times reported that in 2015, the Village Church and Chandler imposed discipline on Karen Hinkley when she filed an annulment lawsuit against a man who admitted to being addicted to child pornography. During the sermon, he disagreed that the church had mishandled the case and said he had met with the family, which the family said was not true. The church settled the case in 2022.
Leave of absence
In August 2022, Chandler took time off from the village church after apparently exchanging multiple Instagram direct messages with a woman who wasn’t his wife. He called the exchange “unsupervised and ill-advised,” and church elders called the leave of absence “both disciplinary and developmental.” The church also says the messages “were not of a sexual or romantic nature.” On December 4 of the same year, he resumed his ministry in the church.
