At the age of 17 years, Holmes started his career, as a cub reporter with the Daily News, an afternoon newspaper in Perth. After working in newspapers for nearly five years, he started his television career in 1982 with the Nine Network in Perth. Moreover, he has worked also for several British media outlets, including WTN, The Observer newspaper, and TV-AM.

Holmes has reported several conflicts, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, the West Bank, and Gaza. He reported on the war in Iraq from the very beginning, making more than a dozen trips there. He reported on all kinds of war including the insurgency and occupation to the trial and execution of Saddam Hussein. Holmes survived an ambush on a two-vehicle CNN convoy which left two CNN staff members dead and one wounded in January 2004.

He covered the Central American migrant crisis from the Mexico-Guatemala border and the drowning deaths of a man from El Salvador and his young daughter, whose bodies were found together on the banks of the Rio Grande after trying to cross into the United States. Most recently, he has covered the deadly protests on the Gaza-Israel border, the Israeli elections, and the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

In 1996, Holmes joined CNNI as the first Australian anchor for the network, has also reported extensively from all corners of the globe including Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Nepal, Mexico, India, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and has traveled to more than 80 countries.

In addition, he reported on the Libyan revolution that led to the toppling of Moammar Gadhafi, working for several weeks with Libyan rebels as they upgrade from the western mountains and covered the at-times fierce fighting in several towns and cities.
