Warren claims that when he was a 19-year-old student at California Baptist University, he received a call to full-time ministry. He and a friend skipped class in November 1973 and traveled 350 miles to San Francisco to hear W. A. Criswell preach at the Jack Tar Hotel. After waiting to shake hands, Criswell turned his attention to Warren and said, “I feel led to lay hands on you and pray for you!”
Warren started writing novels while working at Billie Hanks Jr.’s ministry location, the Texas Ranch for Christ, while still attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.Together with Hanks and Wayne Watts, he cowrote two publications, The Victory Scripture Memory Series and Twelve Dynamic Bible Study Techniques for Laity.
In their Saddleback Valley condo in Orange County, California, Warren and his wife started a Bible study group in January 1980. There were seven other participants as well. On Easter Sunday in 1980, Warren hosted the inaugural Saddleback Church service in front of 200 people at the Laguna Hills High School Theater. The church rapidly expanded as a result of Warren’s ideas for church growth, and in its 35-year existence, it has utilized approximately 80 different facilities. Nearly 20,000 individuals attend church on average each week.
President-elect Obama chose Warren to deliver the invocation at his inaugural event in December 2008. LGBT and pro-choice activists were outraged by the decision, which brought Obama and Warren under fire. Obama defended his selection of Warren by stating that while he did not agree with the minister’s views on abortion and same-sex marriage, there should be an opportunity for discussion on such contentious social issues. When it was revealed that Warren will deliver the keynote address at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Commemorative Service on January 19, 2009, the day before the inauguration, more criticism erupted. Warren gave the invocation on January 20, 2009, and others applauded it for its encouraging message.

Rick Warren Controversies
An article by Suzanne Sataline in the Wall Street Journal from 2006 gave examples of congregations that had divided over expansion tactics and congregations that had evicted members who objected to changes. Although he claims to reject attempts to dismiss church members, Warren concedes that splits occur in congregations that accept his principles, the author of the letter stated.
Some evangelical pastors criticized Warren in 2008 for being too liberal on issues like same-sex marriage and abortion as well as for having ties to Muslim leaders. He responded to these critics by saying that they focused too much on the struggle against homosexual marriage and abortion.
Warren held the Civil Forum on the Presidency with both presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama, during the 2008 US presidential election at his church. Later, when he requested Warren to deliver the invocation at the 2009 presidential inauguration, Obama stirred much controversy.
