Ellis is originally from Columbia, South Carolina, and grew up in the heat of the Southeast. He began studying at the University of South Carolina prior to transferring to North Carolina State University. He is a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from N.C. State.
He started his television career at WFMY in Greensboro, North Carolina, as a weekend meteorologist. Since then he has been the lead meteorologist of several weather teams in the Midwest and Carolinas. He led the weather team at WECT in Wilmington from 2009 to 2013 in hurricane alley.
Ellis became the weekday evening meteorologist at WISH-TV in Indianapolis where he led the coverage of snow storms and tornado outbreaks in 2013. In 2016, he went home to Columbia to become the chief meteorologist for WIS. Ellis joined CBS2 Chicago in July 2017. Before his television career, he served as a climate scientist and programmer for the climate offices in North and South Carolina.

CBS2-WBBM-TV is a television station in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It airs programming from the CBS network. The station is owned and operated by the network’s CBS News and Stations division and it maintains studios on West Washington Street in the Loop district, and its transmitter is located atop the Willis Tower.
WBBM-TV is currently the only “full-power” TV station in Chicago that operates its digital signal on the VHF band. Its rival station, WLS-TV, was the only other station to have operated its full-power digital signal on a VHF allocation until the station moved its digital broadcasts to UHF channel 44, in order to alleviate reception problems, although it retained VHF channel 7 as the allotment for its digital fill-in translator when it launched on October 31, 2009. Some of the viewers had trouble picking up VHF signals after the June 12 transition; as a result, WBBM’s newscasts were simulcast over WWME-CA (channel 23), which served as a low-power analog nightlight service on its analog signal following the transition.
The station launched a streaming news service, CBSN Chicago which is now CBS News Chicago, on April 21, 2020, as part of a rollout of similar services across the CBS-owned stations. The service was initially planned to launch by the end of March 2020 but was delayed by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, WBBM-TV was honored with a Peabody Award for the report “Unwarranted”, a 2019 investigation into botched police raids in Chicago and the impact they left on families and their homes.
