Franks joined the BBC in 1990 as a World Service Production Trainee and worked as a producer, reporter, and part-time presenter for five years. In 1995, he was appointed World Service Political Reporter based in Westminster, and in 1997, he was promoted to World Service Political Correspondent. Moreover, he covered not only British politics, but also events in Northern Ireland, such as the breakdown of the IRA ceasefire in 1996, civil unrest in Northern Ireland over the Parades, and the Good Friday Agreement. In 1999, he started working as a political correspondent for the BBC’s domestic television and radio, including a stint as the political correspondent for Today.
Additionally, franks started presenting The World at One on occasion and contributing to the arts pages of the New Statesman magazine. Franks joined the BBC as a Foreign Correspondent in 2001. His first assignment was to Washington six months after the September 11th attacks. He began a five-year assignment as Europe Correspondent in Brussels in 2002. During the 2003 Iraq war, he reported from all over Europe, as well as from Iraq. His training for the London marathon in 2004 coincided with a month in Baghdad. During this time, he was also used as a guest presenter on the Today show. He was appointed BBC Middle East Correspondent in 2007, based in Jerusalem.
