Phillips has been a television presenter and executive. He served as the head of the Commission for Racial Equality after he was appointed by Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2003 and as the chairman of its successor, the Equality and Human Rights Commission between 2007 and 2012. After his retirement, Phillips continued to chair numerous corporate and social boards. He was the President of the Partnership Council of the John Lewis Partnership from 2015 to 2019.
