Cipolla launched a number of successful entrepreneurial endeavors in his early career. The Cipolla Group, a direct marketing firm based out of New York City, was founded in 1983. It merged with Boston firm Ingalls, Quinn & Johnson in 1991. In 1993, she later left IQ&J to form Pamet River Partners, a digital marketing company. After growing through expansion into London and Paris offices, he sold the Pamet River Partners in 1999 to TeleTech Holdings. He briefly remained as CEO of Pamet and Digital Creators.
He left TeleTech later in 1999 to form HNW, Inc., developing wealth management software. In 2003, she became the CEO of Veritude, a global employment agency that is a division of Fidelity Investments. During this tenure, he sat on the board of Veritude and also of Fidelity Charitable Services, Fidelity’s philanthropic arm.

He is active in several civic organizations focused on conservation and the arts. He started the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Here he served as executive vice president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He also published the Trust’s national publication Preservation. In 2005 he served in the National Park Foundation as its CEO, the private philanthropy that raises funds to support the US National Park system.
Cipolla worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art for 15 years. For 9 years, he served as a chairman and president, before becoming chairman emeritus. Among his accomplishments was the development and completion of a new museum building. Moreover, he joined the Municipal Art Society board in New York in 2008 and accepted the role of the president. Under his leadership, the MAS produced a number of public projects including the 9/11 Tribute in Light Memorial.
Cipolla founded the MAS Summit for New York City, the city’s largest annual urban policy conference. He has conducted the MAS Survey on Livability with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation. He is an active proponent of the rebuilding of a new Penn Station in New York City.

Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic are sharing responsibility for the fundraising effort, which got a high-profile boost in March with a $100 million gift that will see Avery Fisher Hall renamed for the donor, entertainment mogul David Geffen. A veteran cultural executive, Mr. Cipolla held key fundraising roles as president and chief executive of the National Park Foundation. He also served as president and chairman of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Construction on what will become David Geffen Hall is scheduled to begin in 2019.

He developed and launched the national First Bloom program, connecting parks conservation projects with underserved communities, giving young people a special role in national parks stewardship. First Lady Laura Bush served as Honorary Chair and spokesperson for all this work.
