Jenner left Miami and relocated to Los Angeles with only $2,500 to his name. While in California, he took on various jobs, including waiting tables, working in a clothing store, and even selling parrots, all while actively auditioning for acting roles. During this time, he consistently attended improv classes at The Groundlings and eventually performed as a guest with the company two years later. By 2011, Jenner secured roles in the short films Wurlitzer and The Truth In Being Right, as well as the horror film Cousin Sarah. He also made a guest appearance on ABC Family’s sitcom Melissa & Joey as Miller Collins.
In 2012, Jenner auditioned for the second season of The Glee Project, a reality show where the prize was a guaranteed seven-episode arc on the following season of Glee. He emerged as one of the three finalists and ultimately won the competition. Following his portrayal of Ryder Lynn in the fourth season of Glee, he received a Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Breakout Star. Jenner, along with co-stars Jacob Artist, Becca Tobin, Alex Newell, and Melissa Benoist, was promoted to series regular status for the fifth season. During the summer of 2013, Jenner co-wrote the screenplay for Billy Boy and, alongside Benoist, sought funding from fans on Kickstarter, reaching their $100,000 goal by December 11, 2013.

His first appearance on the show aired on January 25, 2016. In 2016, Jenner played Jake Bradford in Richard Linklater’s comedy film Everybody Wants Some!! and portrayed Hailee Steinfeld’s character’s brother in the coming-of-age drama The Edge of Seventeen. In August 2019, it was announced that Jenner would star in Richard Linklater’s film adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along, a project spanning twenty years. However, on January 10, 2023, it was revealed that Jenner would be replaced by Paul Mescal in Merrily We Roll Along.
