Mintz-Plasse made his debut in the film Superbad, where he played the character Fogell at the age of 17. Following that, he appeared in Role Models alongside Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott, portraying Augie Farques, a nerdy teenager with a fascination for medieval live-action role-playing games. He even had a brief guest appearance in an episode of David Wain’s web series, Wainy Days. He starred as a comical version of the biblical figure Isaac in Harold Ramis’s Year One and was part of the short film The Tale of RJ, which served as the foundation for the TV series The Hard Times of RJ Berger.

The next year, he lent his voice to the character Fishlegs in the animated film How to Train Your Dragon. In Kick-Ass, he surprised everyone by taking on the role of the superhero Red Mist, or Chris D’Amico, after initially auditioning for the role of Kick-Ass but being deemed too loud and obnoxious by the producers. In 2010, he made guest appearances in Party Down and voiced the character Giuseppe in the film Marmaduke. That year, he also featured in two music videos, “Erase Me” by Kid Cudi featuring Kanye West and “Answer to Yourself” by the indie rock band The Soft Pack.

Mintz-Plasse joined the cast of the 2011 remake of Fright Night as Edward Lee, Charley Brewster’s former best friend. Initially hesitant due to it being a remake, he accepted the role after reading the script and considering the talent involved. In 2012, he voiced Alvin, a bullying student, in the animated film ParaNorman and had a small role in Pitch Perfect as Tommy, the university’s audition launcher. He also starred in a short film called “Would You,” written by his Fright Night co-star Dave Franco. Although he filmed several episodes for the CBS sitcom Friend Me, the show was canceled after the series creator, Alan Kirschenbaum, tragically died by suicide.

Mintz-Plasse appeared as a fictional version of himself in the promotional video series The Far Cry Experience for the video game Far Cry 3, where he was stranded on an island controlled by a psychopathic pirate named Vaas. He reprised his role as Chris D’Amico in the sequel Kick-Ass 2 in 2013 and appeared in the music video “So Good at Being in Trouble” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra. He also starred in a short segment titled “Middle School Date” in the film Movie 43 alongside Chloë Grace Moretz and had small roles in This Is the End and The To Do List.

In September 2013, Mintz-Plasse and Dave Franco embarked on a week-long road trip across America to promote LG’s flagship smartphone, the LG G2, for the “It’s All Possible” campaign. They documented their journey on Funny or Die. Mintz-Plasse had a supporting role as college fraternity student Scoonie in the 2014 comedy Neighbors and reprised his role as Fishlegs in the animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2. He continued to voice Fishlegs in the DreamWorks Dragons television series, which aired on Cartoon Network and Netflix. Mintz-Plasse also pursued his passion for music, initially playing drums for The Young Rapscallions before founding the band Bear on Fire, where he played bass guitar. Additionally, he played bass guitar for Ben Kweller.
