Dean Baquet Biography

Dean Baquet, born Dean P. Baquet is an award-winning American journalist. Dean is the executive editor of The New York Times. He has held the position since the 14th of May in 2014.

From 2011 and 2014 he was managing editor under the previous executive editor Jill Abramson. Dean is lauded as being the first black American to serve as executive editor.

He was the recipient of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism. He led a team of reporters including William Gaines and Ann Marie Lipinski at the Chicago Tribune which exposed corruption on the Chicago City Council.

He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born to Edward Baquet and Myrtle Romano Baquet. He has four brothers: Edward Baquet Jr., Rudy Baquet, Terry Baquet, and Wayne Baquet. His late father was a well-known New Orleans restaurateur. He was the owner of the famed home-style Creole cooking restaurant, Eddie’s in Gentilly. The establishment was one of the first of its kind in New Orleans.  Edward was, in addition, a member of a prominent New Orleans Creole family. His brother Terry is also a journalist, having won a Pulitzer himself. Terry is the Page One Editor of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

In September of 1986, he married Dylan Landis. The couple has one child, a son named Ari.

Prior to joining the New York Times, he was a reporter for The Times-Picayune of New Orleans, Louisiana. He won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize while working at the Chicago Tribune.

In 1990, he joined The New York Times as a Metropolitan Desk Reporter. He was promoted to the position of special projects editor for the Business Desk in May of 1992. In January of 1994, while holding the same title, he operated out of the executive editor’s office.

He joined the Los Angeles Times as a managing editor in 2000. In 2005, he was promoted to editor of the paper. Following his public opposition of plans to cut newsroom jobs in 2006, he was fired.

Subsequently, he rejoined the New York Times in 2007. There he held positions such as the Washington Bureau Chief, national editor, assistant managing editor, and managing editor. In September of 2011, he was appointed to the Managing Editor position. In this position, he served under executive editor Jill Abramson. On the 14th of May in 2014, he was promoted to executive editor.
