Alhart began on his broadcasting journey by stepping into the world of television at WROC-TV, Rochester, New York, during the summers of 1962 to 1964. He took on the role of a relief engineer, laying the groundwork for a remarkable career. His talents soon extended beyond technical domains, as he was embraced by the news, becoming a dedicated reporter at WOKR-TV, Channel 13 (now 13WHAM ABC), blending his skills with a passion for storytelling.

Alhart has been an active member of the Rochester Rotary Club since 1976 and served as President from 1987-1988. From 2002 to 2003, he served as Rotary district governor for 67 clubs in the greater Rochester area and in upstate South New York. He is also a recipient of the 60th Annual Rotary Rochester Award, the oldest major civic award presented annually to a citizen who has made a significant contribution to the business, professional, cultural or civic community.

Alhart has also been an active member of the Rochester Rotary Club for 33 years, serving as president in 1987 and also governor of Rotary District 7120, which includes Brockport, from 2002 to 2003. Alhart is involved in numerous charities throughout the Rochester area. He celebrated his 50th birthday with Channel 13 in June 2016. He said he plans to work “a few more years” with no intention of retiring anytime soon. Alhart Sets a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a broadcast journalist (50 years and 179 days), confirmed on 2 December 2016.
