Jimmy Fallon Career

Fallon left the College of Saint Rose in 1995 to fully commit to pursuing a career in comedy in Los Angeles. By the age of 21, he had secured a manager and started getting bookings. Fallon frequently performed stand-up at the Improv, earning $7.50 per set, and took classes with the Groundlings, an improv comedy troupe. He had a small role in the feature film The Scheme (originally titled The Entrepreneurs), and although his one line in the 1997 film Father’s Day was cut, he can still be spotted in the background. In 1998, Fallon had a brief appearance on the show Spin City during its second season as a man selling photographs.

Despite various pursuits, Fallon remained determined to join Saturday Night Live (SNL). At the age of 23, Fallon had his second audition, which was challenging. People had warned him that SNL creator Lorne Michaels rarely laughed during auditions. Nervous about being overshadowed by a comedian who came prepared with a multitude of props, Fallon went on stage and performed well. His act included a “celebrity walk-a-thon” featuring impressions of Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Bill Cosby, and Adam Sandler, an SNL alumnus who had recently left the show. Michaels and others in the room laughed. Michaels then informed Fallon that they wanted him for the show, and Fallon, feeling the moment in “slow motion,” expressed to Michaels, “I’m going to make you proud” before leaving.

Acting Career

Fallon decided to explore a film career in 2004. Despite rejecting numerous major roles due to time constraints and a lack of interest in the scripts he encountered, he took on his first leading role in the movie Taxi, a remake of a French film. His decision was influenced by the involvement of co-star Queen Latifah and the film’s action-comedy style, drawing parallels to Eddie Murphy’s early success in 48 Hrs. (1982). During the fall of 2003, Fallon juggled filming in Los Angeles with his return to New York City for SNL. As his contract concluded, his sixth season on SNL marked his departure after the show’s twenty-ninth season in May 2004.

Taxi, which premiered in the fall of 2004 with high expectations from the studio, turned out to be Fallon’s first setback, receiving negative reviews from both critics and audiences. Despite this, 20th Century Fox had already enlisted him for a second major role, co-starring with Drew Barrymore in the 2005 romantic comedy Fever Pitch. While Fever Pitch performed better than Taxi, earning mild reviews and modest box office returns, Fallon’s film offers dwindled. This led to what he refers to as a “lost period,” characterized by increased alcohol consumption and uncertainty about his future career moves. Returning to New York, Fallon spent a couple of aimless years and wrote a screenplay during this period, revolving around a character in a goth band pretending to be a country music star.

More Information

Before departing SNL, Michaels suggested to Fallon that he would be a suitable candidate to take over NBC’s Late Night franchise once Conan O’Brien moved on to the Tonight Show. In February 2007, Michaels recommended that NBC secure Fallon with a holding deal to prevent him from being lured elsewhere. To prepare for his role as a late-night host, Fallon embarked on an eight-month tour of college campuses and comedy clubs, testing a new 50-minute routine. He also delved into the comedy of Chevy Chase, Dick Cavett, Johnny Carson, and The Larry Sanders Show. In May 2008, Fallon was officially announced as the successor to O’Brien’s Late Night.

Saturday Night Live

Fallon made his debut on Saturday Night Live as a featured player at the start of the show’s twenty-fourth season in September 1998. Fallon’s charm resonated strongly with his female fan base, leading to a flood of fan letters and the emergence of numerous fan sites dedicated to him. His contributions led to a promotion to repertory player in his second season.
