Tong began her career at Stanford by chance, working during the summer as a morning editor and producer for KCBS ALL-News radio in San Francisco. Starting as a reporter for KPIX-TV in San Francisco, Kaity was first hired as a writer and then promoted immediately to a street reporter after passing an on-air test where her first report was on the new carts that carried people around the airport.

kaity moved to New York two years later after she was recruited by WABC-TV where she began as a general correspondent and co-anchor of the “Weekend News Edition”, before anchoring the 5 pm and 11 pm newscasts. Tong would later receive the” Exceptional Achievement Award” alongside Gloria Steinem and Beverly Sills from the Women’s Project and was the first woman honored by Rotary International with its “Paul Harris Fellowship.” The New York Women’s Agenda also honored her with a “star” award.
