Harrison had a role in the film adaptation of the 1985 novel Ender’s Game in 2012. He had the opportunity to interact with esteemed actors such as Viola Davis, Harrison Ford, and Ben Kingsley. Harrison acknowledges Viola Davis for inspiring him to take acting more seriously. Subsequently, he had a minor role in 12 Years a Slave. Harrison went on to make appearances in an episode of WGN America’s Underground and the 2016 remake of Roots, both produced in his home state of Louisiana. Additionally, he had a small part in Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation that same year. Initially hesitant to join the cast of Roots, Harrison later realized the distinctiveness of the projects despite both involving portrayals of slavery. During this time, he secured a supporting role in the Fox miniseries Shots Fired and a recurring role as Touie Dacey on Crackle’s StartUp.
In the following years, Harrison’s career continued to flourish. He began 2017 with a supporting role in Dee Rees’ Mudbound, which received critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Later in 2017, he played the character Travis in Trey Edward Shults’ psychological horror film “It Comes at Night,” earning praise for his performance. In 2018, Harrison starred in three films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival: Monsters and Men, Assassination Nation, and Monster. Notably, his role in Monster garnered attention, as the film later secured a distribution deal with Netflix in 2021. Harrison also took on supporting roles in the dramas Jinn and JT LeRoy.

In 2021, Harrison played Christian in Joe Wright’s musical film adaptation Cyrano. Harrison’s roles in 2022 included portraying the legendary blues guitarist B.B. King in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis and playing Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, in the film Chevalier, directed by Stephen Williams.
