Harrison had a role in the film adaptation of the 1985 novel Ender’s Game in 2012. He had the opportunity to interact with esteemed actors such as Viola Davis, Harrison Ford, and Ben Kingsley. Harrison acknowledges Viola Davis for inspiring him to take acting more seriously. Subsequently, he had a minor role in 12 Years a Slave. Harrison went on to make appearances in an episode of WGN America’s Underground and the 2016 remake of Roots, both produced in his home state of Louisiana. Additionally, he had a small part in Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation that same year. Initially hesitant to join the cast of Roots, Harrison later realized the distinctiveness of the projects despite both involving portrayals of slavery.
