The journalism part came after Sze’s family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Bay Area on the Peninsula. In high school, she began writing for the school newspaper, honing her newly-acquired English skills. She realized that she had a golden ticket to meet people, ask questions and find answers. The mission forced her to come out of her shell and overcome her shyness.
Sze reported for the campus radio station KALX at U.C. Berkeley while interning at nearly every Bay Area TV station. She felt her new sense kick into high gear during the Loma Prieta quake. She had driven across the Bay Bridge only an hour before the partial collapse. Immediately, she drove to the station where she was interning. Since it was all hands on deck, she got the chance to get interviews and write some stories. When she heard the first story she wrote go over the air, it was a defining moment. She knew this was it for her. She reported in Binghamton, New York, Fresno, Philadelphia, and New York City before returning home to the Bay Area and ABC7 News in 1998. It was a dream come true. And now, 20 years later, she still feels humbled and privileged to be able to work as a journalist in her hometown.
She finds anchoring most rewarding by providing continuous coverage during breaking news. That is when the community needs journalists most when it counts on them to deliver accurate, important information in real time. That’s also the reason Sze tweets and posts on social media during the newscast. She finds it gratifying to share relevant information and get instant feedback from the viewers.
When she is not working, Sze volunteers at her kids’ schools, cheering for them in sports, and rooting for her Warriors, Giants and Cal Bears. She also enjoys working to empower girls and women in journalism, leadership, and STEM.
