Payton previously worked at WNCN in Raleigh, NC as the evening anchor. On top of special project investigative reporting, he covered politics extensively, including an assignment as the co-moderator of the 2020 North Carolina Senatorial Debate between Thom Tillis and Cal Cunningham.
Moreover, Payton spent three years at WHBQ-TV in Memphis as a weekend news anchor/weekday reporter. While there, he won two Emmy awards and was nominated for two Edward R. Murrow awards. Some of his reporting accomplishments were a story on sex trafficking that resulted in locating a young girl who had been missing for nearly three months, and a feature on the Memphis Veterans Administration which helped lead to a new Accountability Act within the V.A.
Before that, Payton worked as a sports anchor, with stops at KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic in Washington, DC, and Mountain West Sports Network in Denver. Later, he joined Comcast Sportsnet Houston upon its launch in the Summer of 2012 and served in a variety of anchor and reporter roles for the network during its existence. Also, he hosted CSN’s nightly scores and highlights show, Sportsnet Central, as well as Houston Astros pregame and postgame studio coverage. Furthermore, Payton was the lead reporter on Houston Texans coverage, and as such his work aired on NBC Sports Network as well. He also covered the 2013 NBA All-Star Game extensively, as Houston hosted the event. It was upon the disbanding of CSN Houston in 2014 that he decided to make a transition to the news side.

WSMV-TV, also known as Channel 4 is a television station in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. It is affiliated with NBC and is owned by Gray Television alongside low-power Telemundo affiliate WTNX-LD or channel 15. Both stations share studios on Knob Road in west Nashville, where WSMV-TV’s transmitter is also located. Channel 4 signed on the air as WSM-TV on September 30, 1950, at 1:10 p.m. CT. Notably, it was the first television station in Nashville and the second in Tennessee, behind fellow NBC affiliate WMCT in Memphis. Consequently, WMCT was forced to switch to channel 5 to avoid co-channel interference.
Channel 4 has been an NBC affiliate from its sign-on, although it carried some programming from CBS, DuMont, and ABC. Also, its secondary affiliation with CBS ended in 1953, when WSIX-TV or channel 8, now WKRN-TV on channel 2 signed on as a primary CBS affiliate. WSM-TV shared ABC programming with WSIX-TV for a year until WLAC-TV or channel 5, WTVF signed on in 1954 as the market’s new primary CBS affiliate. As a result, WSIX-TV was left to take the ABC affiliation.
WSMV-TV broadcasts 53 hours of locally produced newscasts each week; with nine hours each weekday and four hours each on Saturdays and Sundays. In regards to the number of hours devoted to news programming, it is the highest local newscast output among all broadcast television stations in the Nashville market. Its news department was the first in the United States to receive satellite photographs when it first used them in 1964. During the mid-1970s, the station developed a strong news division that, in the 1980s through the 1990s, won numerous regional and national awards for in-depth and investigative reporting.
