Robert Speta Career
Speta became a part of the First Coast News Weather team in October 2020. Born and raised outside Buffalo, New York. He embarked on a career in the US Navy in 2005 as a Naval Weather Forecaster (Aerographers Mate). His initial assignment brought him to Jacksonville at Naval Station Mayport, providing him with a deep understanding of how weather impacts local military operations.
In 2009, Speta was stationed in Japan aboard the USS Blue Ridge, allowing him to travel and provide weather forecasts across East Asia and the South Pacific. His contributions led to the receipt of multiple Naval Achievement medals, notably for his support during the recovery efforts following the Japan Tsunami of March 11th. Notably, he holds the distinction of being one of the few American meteorologists capable of plotting and forecasting radiation fallout in active operational scenarios.
In 2012, he transitioned to broadcast television, working for NHKWORLD, Japan’s largest TV station. There, he covered weather events worldwide, including reporting from the midst of active volcanoes and the heart of Super Typhoons. During this period, Speta also freelanced for various stations during severe weather events in East Asia, including CNN, The Weather Channel, and the Science Channel.

Speta returned to the United States in 2017 and joined the WHEC weather team in Rochester, New York, where he earned an Emmy for Best Evening Newscast. He reported live from the town of Lodi in Upstate New York, which had been devastated by flash floods. In 2019, Speta came back to Jacksonville to work as an Aviation forecaster for the US Navy, a role he continues while also being a part of the First Coast News team.
Additionally, Speta provides consultation services to international shipping and agricultural companies, primarily in East Asia, making his social media posts encompass a wide range of local and global conditions. During his leisure time, you might spot him on the local mountain bike trails in the First Coast area or flying his drone at the beach.
