Tom Wills Career

Wills became a member of Channel 4 back in 1975. Before joining the Jacksonville team, Wills served as a reporter at WTOP radio and WTOP-TV in Washington. During his time there, Wills had the opportunity to cover pivotal events including the riots following Martin Luther King’s assassination, the funeral of Bobby Kennedy, the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Pentagon Papers, the Watergate break-in, and the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Additionally, Wills also dedicated some of his time as a part-time instructor at American University, sharing his knowledge on news reporting with aspiring journalists.

Since joining WJXT, Wills has had the privilege of conducting interviews and meeting all the presidents from Jimmy Carter onwards. Previously, during his 11-year in Washington D.C., the closest he came to a president was when he was assigned to monitor the White House theater during the Six-Day War in 1967, in case President Lyndon B. Johnson decided to make a statement there. However, that opportunity did not materialize. Similar to many other broadcast journalists, Wills also has some memorable moments that he would rather forget. One such incident occurred when he was anchoring the weekend news and ended up wearing a bright yellow outfit from head to toe. At the time, he didn’t perceive it as embarrassing, but in hindsight, he acknowledges the awkwardness.

Apart from his career, Wills has diverse interests. His favorite book is “Sermon on the Mount” by Emmett Fox, and his preferred movie is the Oscar-winning film “Dances With Wolves.” Additionally, Wills is an enthusiastic sports fan who enjoys watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, as well as supporting the Florida Gators football team and college sports in general.
