Johnson’s fascination with meteorology sparked during her time in Air Force ROTC training in high school, and this passion continued to grow. She pursued her undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she specialized in atmospheric sciences and gained valuable experience at the National Climatic Data Center. Her career took off at The Weather Channel before she transitioned to WBFF, also known as Fox Channel 45, in Baltimore. Subsequently, she made moves to WABC-TV in New York and WMAR in Baltimore. Johnson left WMAR in 1999, due to the inability to accept a significant pay cut at that time. In 2000, she joined News4 and later earned a spot on the board of the American Meteorological Society in 2005.
In 2016, when her colleague, chief meteorologist Doug Hill, announced his retirement, Johnson vied for the top position, leveraging her considerable expertise and experience. However, the network did not appoint her to the role. She then moved to WJLA-TV in 2016, and in December 2022, she was finally named as the chief meteorologist. Outside of her meteorological career, Johnson actively engages in outreach activities aimed at introducing K-12 students to STEM career opportunities. She also participated in a news segment exploring public opinion of weather forecasters and notably brought Conan O’Brien onto her weathercast in 2009.
