Subsequently, in 1999, he submitted “Slow Jams” for the Xeric Grant and received $5,000 to self-publish a second, expanded edition of 1,000 copies, which was released in 1999 with a cover price of $4. In 2005, Sean Parker, an internet entrepreneur and long-time admirer, invited Choe to paint explicit murals in the interior of Facebook’s first Silicon Valley office. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, commissioned him to create somewhat milder murals for their next office. In 2013, Choe initiated an internet-based podcast centered on lifestyle and entertainment in collaboration with adult film star Asa Akira, titled DVDASA.

Choe received an offer for a solo exhibit at the Santa Rosa Museum of Contemporary Art in 2005. His inaugural New York solo exhibit, titled “Gardeners of Eden,” took place in 2007 at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in Chelsea. In 2008, he presented his first solo exhibition in the UK, titled “Murderous Heart,” simultaneously at the London and Newcastle locations of Lazarides Gallery. Collaborating with Harry Kim in 2008, Choe produced an autobiographical documentary titled “Dirty Hands: The Art and Crimes of David.” Choe played the role of Isaac Cho in the Netflix drama-comedy miniseries “Beef,” sharing the screen with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in 2023. Additionally, he created the title cards for episodes 2 to 10 of the series.

Philanthropy

Choe has directed a significant portion of his artistic efforts towards charitable causes, partnering with foundations to contribute to their community initiatives. This includes activities such as raising funds for Haiti in collaboration with Yle Haiti, a foundation established by Wyclef Jean, engaging in art projects with the children of The LIDÈ Haiti Foundation, and creating art with the youth of South-Central LA at APCH.

Controversies

Choe made a statement acknowledging engaging in what he termed as “rapey behavior” with a masseuse. He justified this comment by characterizing the podcast as a work of fiction. In 2017, when commissioned to paint the Bowery Mural Wall, Choe faced opposition from fellow artists, including Swoon, a street artist who protested his involvement in the mural project through a public statement. Jasmine Wahi, another artist, co-organized a performance in front of the mural, expressing the intent to challenge the normalization of rape culture. The mural also faced quick defacement by graffiti artists.

In response, Choe publicly reiterated his denial of any history of sexual assault or rape and issued an apology for his initial podcast remarks. The resurgence of his podcast comments came to light again in April 2023, following the success of the Netflix drama-comedy miniseries “Beef.”
