Highmore started his acting journey by taking on minor roles on television when he was just 7 years old. His first appearance in a film occurred in Coky Giedroyc’s comedy Women Talking Dirty (1999), where he portrayed the son of a woman who had recently separated from her commitment-phobic French partner. Transitioning to the small screen in 2001, Highmore assumed the role of a young King Arthur in the TNT miniseries The Mists of Avalon, a unique interpretation of Arthurian legends highlighting the influential women of Camelot.

The same year, he featured in the BBC miniseries Happy Birthday Shakespeare, embodying a young boy with aspirations of relocating his family to Stratford-upon-Avon. Highmore shared the screen with family members in two distinct films: his brother portrayed his on-screen sibling in Women Talking Dirty, and his father assumed the role of his on-screen father in Hallmark Entertainment’s TV film Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story (2001).

Highmore starred in the family adventure Two Brothers, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, where he played the son of a French administrator skeptical about the potential danger posed by his new friend, a tiger cub named Sangha. He then took on a significant role in the fantasy film Five Children and It (2004). That year marked Highmore’s breakthrough, earning widespread acclaim for his portrayal of troubled Peter Llewelyn Davies in Marc Forster’s semi-biographical film Finding Neverland. This performance garnered him various awards and nominations, including a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer, as well as nominations for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

More Information

In 2005, he took on the lead role of Charlie Bucket in Tim Burton’s musical fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. Johnny Depp, Highmore’s co-star from Finding Neverland, recommended him for the role, having been impressed by his earlier performance. Despite not having seen the 1971 version of the film, Highmore deliberately avoided watching it until after filming to ensure his portrayal of Charlie remained uninfluenced.

His performance earned him another Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer, and he received the Satellite Award for Outstanding New Talent. Highmore also provided his voice for the accompanying video game. He played young Max Skinner in Ridley Scott’s comedy-drama film A Good Year (2006) and took on the role of protagonist Arthur Montgomery in the live-action/animated fantasy adventure film Arthur and the Invisibles (2006), a role he reprised in two sequels.

Highmore then starred as American twins Simon Grace and Jared Grace in the fantasy adventure film The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008), based on the children’s stories by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. He also voiced the characters in the accompanying video game. In the same year, he provided voice acting for the animated film A Fox’s Tale (2008). In 2009, Highmore voiced the lead character in the animated film Astro Boy and its accompanying video game. He later played the main role in the BBC biographical film Toast (2010), portraying chef Nigel Slater, and starred as Hally Ballard in the drama film Master Harold…and the Boys (2010), based on Athol Fugard’s play. In 2011, he co-starred in the romantic comedy-drama The Art of Getting By.

Screenwriting and Producing

In August 2018, Highmore established Alfresco Pictures, his production company affiliated with Sony. The company’s objective is to create scripted series for various platforms, including broadcast, cable, streaming services, and international co-production ventures. Highmore aims to develop projects that convey a broader message, sparking conversations on overlooked topics and amplifying voices and experiences that haven’t been heard before. He explained that the name Alfresco, beyond being a play on his given name Alfred, symbolizes a refreshing, communal openness reflected in the stories of the company.

Highmore expressed his aspiration for Alfresco to contribute to the industry more fully, stating that his natural curiosity led him not only to develop his ideas but also to become a producer involved in helping others share their narratives. In August 2019, it was reported that Highmore would co-write and serve as an executive producer for Homesick, a dark comedy in development at the WarnerMedia-owned cable network.
