Dunning became a part of the First Alert Storm Team in 2011 and currently serves as the meteorologist for NBC2 News TODAY, Southwest Florida’s top-rated morning news program. His fascination with weather developed at a very young age. During middle school, Dunning used his mother’s video camera to create his weather segments, featuring hand-drawn maps and Weather Channel screenshots. He even recruited a few neighborhood kids to assist with news and sports segments, distributing copies of the “Neighborhood News” to every house on the block.
Dunning’s love for broadcasting and meteorology eventually led him to the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication. Afterward, he pursued meteorological studies at Mississippi State University, earning his Master’s Degree in 2009. Before returning to Florida, Dunning worked as the morning and noon meteorologist at WCBI-TV in Columbus, Mississippi. During his final week on the job in Columbus, he covered the historic tornado disaster of April 27, 2011, a day etched in his memory.
When Dunning is not at the First Alert Storm Tracking Center, he indulges in activities such as running, working out, and exploring the diverse offerings of Southwest Florida. He has a particular passion for fishing and being near the water. Moreover, Dunning is a dedicated college football enthusiast. During fall Saturdays, you’ll likely find him cheering on his beloved Florida Gators. Dunning holds the seal of approval from the National Weather Association and can be seen on NBC2 every Monday through Friday, from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.
