Livingston’s first role in film occurred in 1992 with a role in Dolly Parton’s Straight Talk. Relocating to Los Angeles, he secured supporting roles in Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade and The Low Life. His breakthrough came in 1996 with a significant role in the cult classic comedy Swingers. Livingston took on the male lead, Peter Gibbons, in the well-regarded Office Space (1999), alongside Jennifer Aniston, under the direction of Mike Judge. His versatile roles expanded with appearances in HBO’s miniseries Band of Brothers (2001) and the films Adaptation (2002) and The Cooler (2003).

Livingston played a Hollywood agent in Adaptation (2002), an Ivy League character in The Cooler (2003), and took on roles in Winter Solstice and Pretty Persuasion (both 2005). He also became known for portraying the sardonic writer Jack Berger in the fifth and sixth seasons of Sex and the City. Livingston guest-starred in the TB or Not TB episode of House and, in 2006, starred as FBI negotiator Matt Flannery in the Fox series Standoff.

Concurrently, he served as an advertising spokesman for Sprint Nextel. In the summer of 2007, Livingston ventured into off-Broadway theater with Neil LaBute’s In a Dark Dark House.
