McLaren participated in various school and amateur productions for the Leongatha Lyric Theatre before making his professional debut at the age of 12 with a recurring role on the ABC series Something in the Air. Subsequently, he accumulated additional TV credits, including appearances in the children’s series Worst Best Friends, The Saddle Club, and Fergus McPhail. He also had guest roles on Blue Heelers, Comedy Inc., and a recurring role on Neighbours.

In 2004, McLaren secured his first leading role in the children’s series Silversun, broadcast on both the Seven Network and the ABC. His venture into feature films occurred in 2005 with the low-budget Melbourne production Court of Lonely Royals. Throughout 2005, McLaren worked on Last Man Standing and established a presence in the advert voiceover circuit. The following year, he commenced his involvement in the children’s series H2O: Just Add Water, portraying the character Lewis McCartney until the midseason of series three.

In 2008, he joined the cast of Packed to the Rafters as Nathan Rafter, appearing in 102 episodes across the show’s six seasons. From 2013 to 2014, McLaren attended various master classes in New York, LA, Sydney, and Melbourne, and later pursued a Bachelor of Acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. During his time at WAAPA, he took part in eight stage productions, playing notable roles such as The Marquis De Sade in Marat/Sade, The Man in Tender Napalm, and the title role in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus.
