Mallard started his acting career in 2014 at the age of 15, debuting as Ben Kirk in the Australian soap opera Neighbours for a brief three-week, six-episode guest stint. Surprisingly securing the audition through his modeling agent, Mallard, who had not previously considered acting, discovered his passion for it during this experience. He returned for a four-month guest stint the following year while still in school. Opting for a full-time acting career after completing Year 12, Mallard officially joined Neighbours as a permanent cast member in 2016. Mallard took on the recurring role of Lucas Caravaggio in the Netflix horror series Locke & Key, portraying a 17-year-old friend of Rendell Locke. Filming occurred in the first half of 2019, and the series was released on February 7, 2020. He also appeared in the romantic drama film All the Bright Places, which started filming in October 2018 and was released on Netflix in February 2020, based on Jennifer Niven’s young adult novel.
In 2021, Mallard joined the second season of the musical comedy-drama series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC, playing an Australian musician who recently returned from backpacking in Thailand. He performed several songs and dance routines in the role. Mallard then landed the series regular role of Marcus, an edgy 15-year-old proficient in American Sign Language, in the Netflix dramedy Ginny & Georgia. Filming took place in Toronto in the latter half of 2019, and the series was released on February 24, 2021. The show’s popularity led to a renewal for a second season, which aired on January 5, 2023, and significantly increased Mallard’s Instagram following from 90,000 to over 3 million after its release. Later in 2021, Mallard made a return to the second season of Locke & Key, appearing in the final episode.

His fencing earned him two bronze medals in team events at the 2012 Victorian National Champions and a 5th place in the under-15 National Sabre Championships in 2013.
