In 1968, the family moved to New York City, igniting Ross’s interest in broadcasting during their six-year residency. His enthusiasm for the field sparked after a visit to one of NYC’s prominent radio stations arranged by a friend’s father, where he had the opportunity to meet renowned DJs and radio newscasters. In 1974, Ross’s family relocated to New Orleans during his high school years.

He pursued a major in Communications/Broadcast News at Loyola University, balancing full-time work as a staff announcer at a local radio station throughout his college tenure. Additionally, he assumed the role of general manager at Loyola’s campus radio station during his senior year and later became an instructor in on-air techniques and radio production at Loyola post-graduation. Ross transitioned to Baton Rouge, initially in radio news at WJBO-AM, before joining WAFB-TV as a reporter in 1981. He later moved to WBRZ-TV as an environmental reporter and weekend anchor.

In 1986, Ross returned to New Orleans to join WWL-A.M., where he anchored a comprehensive three-hour all-news show in the afternoon. His time with WWL-TV commenced in 1988, covering city hall, the state legislature, and various hurricanes, including Hurricane Andrew. In 1995, he assumed the role of assignment editor, directing news crews to their respective stories. Establishing a bureau in the Northshore region of south Louisiana in 1996, Ross catered to the area’s population, akin to the size of Anchorage, Alaska. During Hurricane Katrina, WWL-TV remained the sole television station in New Orleans to stay on the air. Ross is a proud parent to three children: Jonathan (21), Amanda (18), and his adult son, Michael, and enjoys spending time with his two grandchildren, Emma and John Michael.
