Cost was raised in a household where nightly news was a regular occurrence. She joined News10NBC after an almost three-year tenure at News8WROC. During her time at WROC, she acquired experience working the morning shift, exposing her to spot news, live interviews, and feature stories. Her role also extended to being the lead reporter for the early evening newscasts, providing her with the opportunity to cover significant local stories. This included investigations into a local homeless shelter following a deadly machete attack and attending various high-profile trials. In addition, she made a brief appearance in the CBS 48Hours report on the 1982 Brighton ax murder.
Cost graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a journalism degree and a minor in music. Her internship and collaboration with advisor Elmer Ploetz, a former journalist with The Buffalo News, were important in shaping her skills.
